Simple Translate: Desktop App For Translation

Simple Translate, as the name suggests, is a tiny application for simple translation.

This open source application is under heavy development at present and provides some really basic features with a neat GUI. The interface is fairly simple. The window pane is divided into two parts. You can choose the languages and feed the input in the upper part. The text is translated, as you write, in the lower part.

There is a dictionary option available as well. You can search for the words and it will show you the meaning of the word:

Dictionary can be used separately

At present, Simple Translate supports the following language:

  • English
  • French
  • Spanish
  • Russian
  • Dutch
  • Deutsch
  • Ukrainian

A lot missing

Well, that’s pretty much about the features of Simple Translate. Let’s see what are the downside of this tiny application.

First, the translation is not very intelligent. For example, I used the following simple statement with comma and the translation failed:

Simple Translate translation fails
Messed up translation

Moreover, the application requires an active internet connection. So no offline usage and that’s the deal breaker. Moreover, there is no option to download the dictionary for offline translation (like Google Translate mobile application).

Since it’s a desktop application, I would prefer that it has offline functioning else I would prefer to use translation in a web browser rather than installing an app.

I think these are some of the features the developer should be focusing on in the future.

Install Simple Translate in Ubuntu

There is an official PPA available for Ubuntu 15.10 and Ubuntu 16.04. You can use it to install Simple Translate. PPA should also work in Linux Mint 17.

Use the commands below:

sudo apt-add-repository ppa:grabli66-r/eos
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install translator

Once installed, just look for it in Unity Dash if you are using Ubuntu Unity.

If you want to remove Simple Translate, use the commands below:

sudo apt-get remove translator
sudo apt-add-repository --remove ppa:grabli66-r/eos

Install Simple Translate in other Linux distributions

You can download the source code of Simple Translate to install it in other Linux distributions:

Simple applications like this and Notes etc should be encouraged for a better desktop Linux experience. I hope that the developer pays attention to the feedback here and provides at least the offline capability. That would surely get it more users. What do you think?

P.S. If you develop apps for Linux, feel free to contact us and I would be happy to cover it on It’s FOSS.
