The game also includes strategy and RPG-like mechanics as players can work to level up and train their characters to learn new in-game abilities. “I’m proud to say that ‘Futurama’ lives! In mobile-video-game teaser trailer form, anyway,” Groening said in a statement. “If you squint, it’s kind of like a little episode.”
For longtime fans of the show, Futurama: Worlds of Tomorrow is also notable thanks to the involvement of the show’s cast and major creative team. The game’s story was written by creator Matt Groening, producer David X. Cohen and other original Futurama writers. Worlds of Tomorrow also features the show’s full original cast, including voice actors Billy West (Fry), Katey Sagal (Leela) and John DiMaggio (Bender). Jam City expects to release weekly updates for the game that will include new characters, quests and storylines.
“Futurama is back, bigger and better than ever!” Cohen said in a rilascio. “Or possibly smaller and equally good. But either way, it’s back! We’ve got completely new stories from the original writers, cast and animators. This is the real ‘Futurama’ deal.”
“Futurama” originally debuted on Fox in 1999 from Groening, who is best known for launching the long-running animated sitcom “The Simpsons.” The show ran on the network for four seasons until its initial cancellation in 2003. The series then saw a DVD movie revival in 2008 before starting a second run on Comedy Central. This cable run for the show continued until its second cancellation in 2013.
