Install KDE Plasma 5.3 in Ubuntu 15.04 or Kubuntu 15.04

Install KDE Plasma 5.3 Desktop Environment on Ubuntu 15.04, Ubuntu 14.04 and Derivatives. Update KDE Plasma 5.2 Desktop Environment to KDE Plasma 5.3 and add the Kubuntu Backports PPA repository on Ubuntu.

To begin the installation process, add the Kubuntu Backports PPA repository using the following command. Open Terminal and run the following command:

$ sudo add-apt-repository ppa:kubuntu-ppa/backports

Install KDE Plasma 5.3 in Ubuntu 15.04/Kubuntu 15.04

Once you have added the Kubuntu Backports PPA, run the following commands in Terminal to install KDE Plasma Desktop:

$ sudo apt-get update
$ sudo apt-get dist-upgrade
$ sudo apt-get install kubuntu-desktop

The above commands will download and install the KDE Plasma 5.3 packages. The above process will take some time, depending on your Internet speed.

  • Please Note: While the installation process, you will be asked to configure the sddm login manager. When asked, click OK and choose the ‘lightdm’ entry to keep the default login manager of the Ubuntu 15.04.

Once the installation process is over, please restart the computer.



  • To use the KDE Plasma Desktop, at the login screen, click the ubuntu login-icon (small circle next to the username) and select the ‘Plasma’ session. Enter password and you will be ready to use KDE Plasma 5.3 desktop environment.

Uninstall KDE Plasma 5.3 From Ubuntu 15.04

If you wish to uninstall and remove the KDE Plasma 5.3 desktop environment from Ubuntu, run the following commands to uninstall it:

$ sudo apt-get install ppa-purge
$ sudo ppa-purge ppa:kubuntu-ppa/backports
$ sudo apt-get purge kubuntu-desktop sddm
$ sudo apt-get autoremove
