Howto: Install NginX on Ubuntu 10.04 (or newer) 32bit via apt-get

Want to install latest NginX stable/development version on Ubuntu 10.04 32bit (or newer) using apt-get with some additional compiled-in modules? Then, follow this quick howto and make your life easier!

Note: This Ubuntu PPA contains some additional compiled-in modules, which may not be available in default NginX package on The modules you might require to install manually, might already be available in this PPA package, so it definitely saves some time.

The following configuration options are set by default in this package:

configure arguments: –prefix=/etc/nginx –conf-path=/etc/nginx/nginx.conf –error-log-path=/var/log/nginx/error.log –http-client-body-temp-path=/var/lib/nginx/body –http-fastcgi-temp-path=/var/lib/nginx/fastcgi –http-log-path=/var/log/nginx/access.log –http-proxy-temp-path=/var/lib/nginx/proxy –http-scgi-temp-path=/var/lib/nginx/scgi –http-uwsgi-temp-path=/var/lib/nginx/uwsgi –lock-path=/var/lock/nginx.lock –pid-path=/var/run/ –with-debug –with-http_addition_module –with-http_dav_module –with-http_geoip_module –with-http_gzip_static_module –with-http_image_filter_module –with-http_realip_module –with-http_stub_status_module –with-http_ssl_module –with-http_sub_module –with-http_xslt_module –with-ipv6 –with-sha1=/usr/include/openssl –with-md5=/usr/include/openssl –with-mail –with-mail_ssl_module –add-module=/build/buildd/nginx-1.1.11/debian/modules/nginx-echo –add-module=/build/buildd/nginx-1.1.11/debian/modules/nginx-upstream-fair

If you wish to continue, then follow the steps below:

Step 1. Update apt-get and install python-software-properties package via apt-get.

apt-get update
apt-get install python-software-properties

Step 2.

sudo -s

Step 3. Set nginx=stable to install stable version or nginx=development to install development version.


Step 4. Add nginx PPA repository.

add-apt-repository ppa:nginx/$ nginx

Step 5. Update apt-get to get data on latest packages.
