Apple iPhone 8 Not Coming With Curved Edge OLED Display, Source Says

If a new report is to be believed, Apple’s highly anticipated iPhone 8 will not come with a curved edge OLED display. This is in spite of numerous speculations and previous reports claiming otherwise.

This new report from South Korean publication The Korea Herald is citing an unnamed source, who is said to have knowledge on the matter. The source claims Apple’s first OLED iPhone will most likely have a flat screen instead of a display panel that has curved edges just like what Samsung used on its Galaxy S8 and S8+ handsets.

“Apple is highly unlikely to follow the same design of its rival’s. Instead of the curved edge display, it will have a flat screen with bezel-less on the top and bottom alongside the two sides,” the source was quoted as saying. The source went on to say that Apple intends to make its flagship phone thinner and lighter compared to its previous installments that have liquid crystal displays.

The source’s statement is contradicting several reports saying Apple has opted to use OLED panels in order for it to adopt a curved edge display much like what Samsung’s current flagships are offering. After all, Samsung’s Infinity Display has definitely turned heads when the new S-branded phones were introduced.

Unfortunately, Apple’s decision to use OLED panels for its iPhone 8 may have caused it to delay the launch of the new iPhone. Apple is solely relying on Samsung Display for its supply of OLED display panels. Since the latter is having a hard time meeting Apple’s demand, the release of the phone has been compromised, according to The Investor.

KGI Securities analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, who is known for leaking mostly accurate information on Apple’s iPhone releases and other products, has said that the iPhone 8 will most likely hit stores a month or two after Apple’s launch event in September. “Apple may unveil its iPhone 8 in September, but it is predicted to go on sale in October or November,” Kuo said.

Despite the delay, Apple’s iPhone 8 is still expected to do well on the market given its new features. For instance, there have been reports saying the iPhone 7 successor will have an advanced facial recognition sensor and 3D sensors that will help the device perform augmented reality functions.

Another key feature that the iPhone 8 will come with is wireless charging. Though Apple isn’t the first company to do so, loyal fans of the Cupertino giant would surely be glad to know that they won’t need to have physical wires or cables all the time to rejuvenate their iPhone’s battery. Wireless charging would only require them to place their handset on or near a charging station.

Finally, another main attraction that Apple will be showcasing once the iPhone 8 arrives is the device’s support for augmented reality. Apple has already introduced its augmented reality toolbox called ARKit. The company is then expected to introduce its AR apps for iOS 11 that were made using the toolbox later this fall, TIME has learned.

Apple also attempted to embed the fingerprint scanner into the OLED display panel of the iPhone 8. However, it failed to realize its goal just like Samsung, who also tried to come up with an in-display fingerprint reader for its Galaxy Note 8.
